Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder and can stop you living your life as you choose. Phobias are a persistent, irrational fear of an object or situation. Fear of flying, heights, fear of open spaces or dogs, fear of social gatherings, fear of creepy crawlies, snakes and insects are among them.
It is said we are born with two fears, a fear of falling and fear of loud noises. All other fears are learnt behaviour.
We may have phobia from growing up with a family member who is frightened of something, perhaps spiders or having injections (fear of needles), and seeing their reactions. We can learn phobias from the negative reactions to objects or situations from our friends. Negative or traumatic experiences in our lives, e.g. an accident or frightening situation can cause fear and phobia. Sometimes we may have fear of fear itself. When we see or imagine the object or situation relating to our fear/phobias, we feel all the original emotions again. Unresolved issues can also cause phobias.
